Dry clean only when absolutely necessary

Generally, you should dry clean your suit as little as possible. Dry cleaning involves the use of blasting the fabric of your suit with harsh chemicals. While the occasional dry clean won’t cause too much damage, over-cleaning can weaken the fibres and cause the colour to fade. Taking good care of a suit will restrict the need for it to be dry cleaned more than three times a year at the most.

Rotate and protect

One of the easiest ways to maintain the condition and cleanliness of a wool suit is to allow time for it to recover. Avoid wearing the same suit two days in a row. Rotating your suits allows your suit to recover and prevent it from deteriorating.

Hang and breathe

Immediately hanging your suit after wearing aerates the fabric, which prevents the build-up of odours. Wool is a natural fibre and as such breathes. In other words, it allows for airflow that helps dissipate moisture absorbed by the garment.

An essential is to use a hanger that is contoured in the natural shape of the shoulders. This will help maintain the shape of your suit and prevent the shoulders from folding as occurs when using a more standard narrow hanger. A natural wood hanger will help absorb any moisture contained within the fabric.

Steam, not iron

Excess heat can be damaging to wool so don’t iron your wool suit. A steamer can be good investment and provide huge dividends in the long term care of your suit.

Portable steamers will help remove any wrinkles that may develop through daily wearing or poor storage. They also remove the daily build-up of dirt and thus help maintain a pristine, clean wool suit. Do be careful not to hold the steamer head against the fabric as this can cause excess heat and moisture.

Brush before dry cleaning

Invest in a good quality suit brush and gently give your suit a brush after every time you wear it.

This will help remove the dirt and tiny particles that cause odours without damaging the suit.

Stains

Gently wipe with a damp cloth and allow to dry. For harder to remove stains you will need to see a drycleaner but be sure to talk to them about the method and  likely success of the treatment first.

We hope this helps you get the very best out of your suit investment and we look forward to seeing you again.
